Though football didn't come home in the end, supporters up and down the country are reacting with pride after England's Euros final match against Italy, the first major tournament final to involve England since 1966.

Gareth Southgate's squad lost the game on penalties after a nail-biting 120 minutes of football which was watched by millions around the world, including many an English-supporting celebrity.

Following the result, Adele was one high-profile football fan who shared her support for the team by sharing a photograph of herself in a red England shirt on Instagram with the caption: 'You did us so proud! You brought our game home and brought us all together.'

The singer shared a photograph of her makeshift set up to watch the game during a video shoot, but at the end of the match shared a photograph of England player Bukayo Saka - who was one of three players who missed a penalty int he shoot out and looked the most devastated after Italy were crowned winners - writing: that 'all the boys made us so proud'.

The royals were some of a handful of celebrities who watched the game at Wembley from the box, bringing along their (ultimately, devastated) eldest son Prince George to watch. Following the defeat, Prince William sent a personal message to the team filled with words of encouragement.

Heartbreaking. Congratulations @Azzurri on a great victory. @England, you’ve all come so far, but sadly this time it wasn’t our day. You can all hold your heads high, and be so proud of yourselves — I know there’s more to come. W

The 2021 England football squad have made history, after reaching the final of the Euros and of a major international tournament for the first time since the World Cup victory of 1966.

England beat Denmark 2-1 in their semi-final match on Wednesday, with the winning goal resulting from a failed penalty saved by captain Harry Kane during extra time. The team will face Italy in the final, at Wembley, on Sunday July 11.

Though England emerged victorious, the game was not an easy win. It was tense, unpredictable and, for many England fans, torturous at times. But the final feeling was jubilation, relief and celebration, which has been shared by celebrities too.

From Prince William (who was watching the game at Wembley) and Kate Middleton to Adele, here are the best celebrity reactions to England reaching the finals of the Euros 2020 (postponed to 2021, due to the Coronavirus pandemic).

Prince William watched both the quarter and semi-final from the royal box and was seen celebrating as the referee blew the full time whistle. The Duke of Cambridge watched the game by himself as his wife is currently self-isolating at home under government guidelines, after reportedly coming into contact with somebody who later tested positive for Covid-19.

The couple took to their Twitter account to congratulate the team on their win, ensuring they included the hashtag #ItsComingHome:

What a game, what a result! A huge team effort @England. The whole country will be behind you on Sunday #ItsComingHome
