The shuttering of Sunland Inc. under new Food Safety Modernization Act authority holds lessons, Acheson writes.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - In late November, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) exercised new authority under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) to shutter Sunland Inc.'s Portales, N.M. food facility in the wake of a Salmonella outbreak. Leavitt Parnters' Dr. David Acheson says in a recent blog post that there are lessons to be learned from the closure.
"Sunland did put a corrective action plan together (after the Salmonella outbreak)," Acheson writes. "But the FDA did not like what they saw and thus suspended the facility's registration. The critical lesson here is to work very closely with the regulators in response to situations like this."
Acheson also writes that he predicted that FDA would first exercise its registration suspension authority under FSMA with a "big bang." He said the shuttering of Sunland proves his "big bang theory."

'FreshFacts on Retail,' the United Fresh Foundation's quarterly report, shows strong Q3 for these products.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Fresh produce maintained sales figures from the previous year in Q3 of 2012, driven by fruits and other produce, and decreases in average retail price boosted volume sales, especially for fruit categories, according to the latest edition of FreshFacts on Retail, the quarterly retail research report of the United Fresh Foundation.
Organic and value-added fruits and vegetables continued with a strong sales performance. Though vegetables declined in overall dollar and volume sales, total produce sales and volume grew. Other produce, a category defined by products such as grains, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, dressings and beverages, increased significantly compared to the same period last year, according to the report.
